So, you think that the only way a person can be a hero is to get killed in war? Get you name on a war memorial? Well, it happens that one of the names on the Vietnam War Memorial is a young Corporal in my platoon; a friend of mine. One night, he put his M-16 in his mouth and pulled the trigger. Do you think he was a hero? I don't; as much as I liked him. We talked a lot. He had a death wish ... really. Bravery for him was not death, it was holding on for the sake of those who love him, and there were many. It would have been easy for McCain to give in to his captors. He was brave. He didn't give in. Hero.

I can't get excited by the question of whether Senator Robert Menendez had sex with a prostitute in Central America. It is her word against his -- and when it comes to a prostitute's word against a politician's word, that is too close to call.
