In the New Testament, it is not necessarily true that one does not demean or damage oneself for the sake of one's fellows. The Lord of Glory (Jesus Christ) demeaned and damaged His physical self so that He could save His own from eternal death. "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." (John 15:13.) Jesus abased Himself so that we would not be lost, which would have been the price for our sins. (See also Philippians 2:5-11.) We are not to treat ourselves badly for no reason, but the point was made by the Son of God Himself, that as He was a servant, so are we to be for others.
