Any, some, or all of these (and the Times guy's theories, Hill's theories or those mentioned below) may be the villain(s) in the Case of the Missing Jewish Deli. Until someone tracks down ex-Jewish delicatessen owners and asks them I'm willing to say that I really don't know why they closed. And neither does the LA Times or Austin Hill.
