In response to:

Strangulation by Union

PBS? Gosh, they're totally objective. There are 1000 fold examples of exactly the opposite of what you state. The unions exist for the benefit of the union. Not the teacher members, not the students. When payment of union dues was no longer accomplished by compulsory payroll deduction in Wisconsin, dues collections plummeted, No perceived value I'd guess. The long running tragedy of the union scam is finally being exposed and only in the fairy tale world of government employment is membership rising. Of course, that's no surprise since the federal government has done such a swell job of managing social security and its other "math doesn't matter" Ponzi schemes. Good luck with your union kool aid chugging there "everyone..."

"The facts are"....? If a fact means a made up claim, then maybe. Union membership peaked at 22% at the end of WW2 so most Americans didn't have parents in a union unless most means 22%. When JFK opened up Public Employees to Unionize then they started using Union Dues (supplied by tax funded wages) to buy politicians who turned around and raised thier wages (tax money), so Unions are to blame since the (uninformed) public tends to vote for the guy who spend the most money.

Aw c'mon get off your high horse. The facts are that most Americans of middle age had their parents in a Union of some kind or another. Why all the demogaguery?....If it wasn't for the Unions, there would not have been as many families owning their own homes. Unions gave workers discretionary income. Just because it has been politicized and corrupted doesn't mean that the Unions have not done their jobs, but rather that the system is broken. The money public service employees make is given to them by the politicians that were elected by the very same people ranting about the Unions. Get a grip. Be honest and fair. If you don't like it, target the politiicians that cut the deals, not the employees.

Merrow has been a follower of Rhee, I would not call him a champion, and a close follower of the changes in New Orleans. I don't know his politics, but he is a believer that change needs to occur.

I don't think the WI union numbers plummeting was because of the mandatory deductions. IMO it was because they disallowed the union from representing workers in matters except compensation.

The Chicago teachers strike is over, but the public didn't win. Schools will still transfer bad teachers to other schools because it's nearly impossible to fire them. When bad teachers go from school to school, principals call it "the dance of the lemons." It would be funny if those teachers didn't slowly wreck children's lives.

The basic issue is: Who decides how to manage a workplace? Unions say it's good that they protect American workers from arbitrary dismissal and make sure everyone is treated equally.

But it's not good.

Rules that "protect" government workers from arbitrary dismissal and require everyone...
