This is stupid. I remember the fire departments who reduced the physical test requirements so women could pass. I remember seeing a video of a woman trying to lift a ladder to a second story window only to have it fall back on her head. Could you imagine being in a burning building and at a window where you only have seconds to escape and this woman couldn’t get the ladder to you in time or before someone could get there to help her? Could you imagine being a GI patroling tose dangerous streets and getting involved in hand to hand combat and you see the woman next to you go down quickly while you’re holding your own with your combatant, knowing in seconds the enemy who vanquished the woman will be on your back in a few seconds?

The first line of attack in political battles is language. Getting people to phrase things your way is the first step to getting them to think your way.

In the foggy mess of the debate over women in combat, you will see media references to a “ban” being “lifted.”

Bans are bad. Lifting bans is good. Therein lies the bias strangling this issue in the dominant media culture.
