Did you skip over the headline that says support now crosses party lines? Did you miss the fact that Senator Portman is a conservative, like most of us who read Townhall? Did you not hear the news that 75 prominent Republicans signed an amicus brief supporting gay marriage in the Proposition 8 case that is before the Supreme Court? Have you ever heard of Barry Golwater, whom some of us are old enough to have voted for? He wrote the book on conservative politics ("Conscience of a Conservative") but he loved his gay grandson and favored gays in the military DECADES before anyone else did. He expressed anger at having to “endure the threats of every religious group that thinks it has a God-given right to control my vote in the Senate."

Portman is no conservative. Conservatives use rational thought and bedrock principles to establish positions. Emotionally endorsing gay marriage in order to attempt to win back the affection of an estranged homosexual son is NOT Conservative.
In an opinion article in the Columbus Dispatch, Ohio Republican Sen. Rob Portman announced that he has changed his mind and now supports same-sex marriage.

He wrote that on learning that one of his sons is gay he "wrestled with how to reconcile my Christian faith with my desire for Will to have the same opportunities to pursue happiness and fulfillment as his brother and sister."

He is not the only prominent Republican to come to this view in this way. Former Vice President Dick Cheney is another.
