The College Scam

LL2 Wrote: Jul 06, 2011 11:47 AM
High school counselors push every student to go to college because that's how high schools measure success. Many kids are not academically inclined and forcing them into college just dumbs down college for the true academics. Think of all of the BS cources taught today and compare that with a true liberal arts education like our Founding Fathers obtained. Studies in the classics, history, economics, and law as compared to today's ethic studies, women's studies, and analysis of TV shows. It's also true that skilled blue-collar workers can make as much or more than most college graduates. Community colleges and trade schools are booming with people getting certificates and licences in medical technology, mechanics, and machinery. They...

Who Is Gary Johnson?

LL2 Wrote: Jun 22, 2011 7:12 PM
I like Gary Johnson and he did a fabulous job as governor of New Mexico. That he can't be heard as a serious candidate because he's not a social conservative is a travesty. Republicans claim to believe in the Constitution and what it says as written. They are hypocrites. No where does it say the Federal government has the right to make pot illegal when individual states say that it's not. You either believe in the Constitution or you don't.

I'm no longer a practicing Catholic, actually atheist now, but my mom went to Cathedral High School, adjacent to the Cathedral (now Basilica) in Denver. The last time I was there was my younger cousin's wedding, many years ago. It's a beautiful place. Denver also has the Holy Ghost Church which has a High Latin Mass every Sunday. I'm planning to take my now adult daughter to a service sometime soon, she wants to hear the music in a traditional setting. I was unfortunate enough to attend Holy Trinity, a church that decided to redecorate in the 70s. Jesus was removed from the cross and hung on a yellow blob while the carpet was orange shag, UGH! In the Denver area, most Catholic congregations are now mostly Hispanic. They even offer...

Black Education Disaster

It's not just the black inner city schools anymore, most public schools provide a terrible education. My kids attended an upper-middle class high school in the suburbs and still came out with a mediocre education. Anything they know well they learned at home. I have always regretted not being able to homeschool. They had several excellent teachers, but most were mediocre and some were downright incompetent. One math teacher NEVER graded homework, he only checked to see if the page was complete. Many student learned that they could show the same assignment every day and never did another assignement. This teacher adjusted grades at the end of the semester so that everyone passed his class. I can tell you that they learned nothing,...

Can Republicans Talk?: Part II

Sigh, no, that's not what conservatives want. They want us to go back to our Constitutional roots where the federal government is only responsible for those thing as stated in the Constitution. No more nanny government from D.C. Everything else is left to the states and to the people.

Hmmm, Is_night vs Dr. Jude Capper, an assistant professor of dairy sciences at Washington State University, who would you believe? Scientific studies and common sense (15 months vs 23 months) vs feel-good rainbows and kitties.

Deficit Reduction

Sorry George, that's been tried many times over and just doesn't work. All it does is start a trade war with other countries, leaving our companies nowhere to sell their products on top of more expensive goods for us. The only proven way to help the economy is lower taxes, less regulation, and a more certain political future. Companies are hoarding their cash because they don't know what the government is going to do next that will cost them more money. More regulation means more cost to business, money they should be spending on higher production and more hiring. Lower taxes would also boost job creation. The only ones who benefit from tarrifs and restricted trades are the unions and they've already done more than their share to harm...

Repeal the 26th Amendment!

Just like most things in life, absolutes don't exist. My 3 kids are all conservatives and it just about killed my 17-year-old that he couldn't vote in this election. They are far more knowledgeable and responsible than my sister-in-law, a proud member of the Worst Generation who not only voted for Obama, but campaigned for him as well. She is the same person who bought a house next to an airport and then complained about the noise. She is the same person who resents anyone with a decent job because she badgered her husband into quitting a good job because she didn't like his hours. She's the same person who retired early from teaching even though they have a new mortage and can't afford it. She's the same person who happily vacations...

The Vast Child-Fattening Conspiracy

LL2 Wrote: Nov 12, 2010 6:34 PM
kids are fat today because they stay locked up in their homes and schools in front of electronic devices instead of playing outside. The helicopter parents in our neighborhood DRIVE their kids 2 blocks to the bus stop, even in beautiful weather. We have a park no more than 2 blocks from any house in the neighborhood, there are never any kids playing in it. You don't see kids on bikes, playing ball, walking, or anything. They are all inside. A nutritionist recently did an experiment and proved that weight is simply a matter of the amount of calories consumed. He lost 27 lbs in a month even though he only ate Twinkies. Weight is a simple formula - the amount of calories eaten vs the amount of calories burned through exercise.

No one is tricked. Is anyone really stupid enough to think that the giant hamburger loaded with cheese and fried things is good for you? You make choices for yourself and your kids. Plenty of people manage a healthy diet, this is just more nanny saving people from themselves. There are also many people who manage to stay healthy and still eat yummy unhealthy food, should they be denied because some yahoo can't control himself? Companies give consumers what they want, i.e. responding to the market. Many so-called healthy foods have been tried, most of them taste like crap. I for one, prefer real butter to hydrogenated fake fat. It tastes far better so I don't need as much, and it has it's place in a healthy diet.
