The Supreme Court decided today it will hear two cases surrouding gay marriage with rulings coming down as Spring 2013. More from POLITICO:
The Supreme Court announced Friday that it will take up same-sex marriage, hearing both a case stemming from California’s Proposition 8 voter-approved ban on gay marriage and a case from New York challenging the constitutionality of the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act.

The fact that Republicans think this is a "logical extension" of the doctrine makes zero sense. The Supreme Court is well-grounded in the notion that two consenting adults can enter into a marriage. That general proposition has not changed simply because the gender roles are eliminated.
And to anyone who would say that general proposition will fall as well, I would ask them to take a look at court precedent surrounding marriage. It's pretty clear that applying equal protection to the institution of marriage isn't going to lead to polygamy or "inter-species" relationships (that's just ridiculous). That the right can't see the differences between homosexuality and the relationships mentioned above shows simple ignorance.
