I seem to remember another governor who had sky-high approval rates in her native state: it was Governor Sarah Palin, of course. High state approval rates don't necessarily transfer, although in Gov. Palin's case, the character assassination and lack of defense from her own party did not help.

Since when did Sarah Palin have character? Her popularity in her home state sunk like a stone once Alaskans got her number. That's pretty much why she unexpectedly resigned.
The popular annual Conservative Political Action Conference, held in the Washington, D.C. area every year and the largest annual gathering of conservatives, has so far not extended an invitation to popular Republican Governor Chris Christie this year.

ABC News reports:

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is “not being invited” to CPAC, according to a source close to the event who was not authorized to speak publicly. The source would not answer why Christie, who is widely thought to be interested in the 2016 presidential race, would not be invited to the confab of conservative activists.
