There has been a wildly successful pilot program for inner city kids in Washington D.C. for some years. The kids did great and everybody loved it.

In reading over these comments, one leapt out at me - #17, JimP, who states that simply and insightfully that government cannot transmit character.

Character is what all the players in this issue now days lack, and desperately need - the parents need it, the teachers need it, the leadership needs it and then ultimately the kids will absorb it. And then, for all their flaws and problems, our schools will be schools again. No policy change will matter until that happens.

She has responded to this over and over - what you refer to is a "gotcha question" from Katie Couric, following a whole raft of other "gotcha questions" and a lot of condescension over a long and tedious interview. Palin was not unable to cite anything. She was disgusted with the question and has since stated that she should have answered it anyway.

Given that a week before the interview Palin had published an extensive op-ed piece in the august NEW YORK TIMES, and that she was a wildly successful governor who made it to the top 100% on her own, one imagines she...
