What absolute codswallop to say that it is more comforting to be told your child is in an imaginary place with an imaginary being.... The older I get, the more outraged I feel about this fairy story for grown ups. To explain the unexplainable with ridiculous platitudes such as 'its gods will', how do you know this, did he telephone you? Or were you just too lazy or stupid to look at the real reasons why awful things in our world happen....
Last week the New York Times published an opinion piece that offered atheism's response to the evil/tragedy in which 20 children and six adults were murdered at the Sandy Hook elementary school in Connecticut.

What prompted Susan Jacoby to write her piece was a colleague telling her that atheism "has nothing to offer when people are suffering."
