I would further wager that the British would have wanted to outlaw the Kentucky Long Rifle, a far superior rifle to the 'Brown Bess' that the British infantry carried at the time of the Civil War! Not only was the Kentucky Long Rifle far more accurate, but the range at which it was effective had no equal in that time period. Certainly if they had known this they would have attempted to ban the original 'assault rifle'.
