Republicans understand that changing the direction in which the country is headed involves a major and difficult effort which they are not capable of. They keep hoping for the return of 'non-partisan' politics in which they win a few and the Democrats win a few, thereby enabling them to retain their positions long enough to receive magnificent benefits once they are defeated or retire. He had it right, as Todd Akin can testify.

In an interview that aired last Sunday, Akin, the Republican candidate for Senate in Missouri, was asked whether he opposed abortions for women who had been raped. Akin's reply:

"From what I understand from doctors, that's really rare. ... If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down ... .
