Diana: His Mother was an American Citizen so why would that not qualify? Why is only his father's nationality important??

Actually, under the law at that time, if Obama's father had been legally married to his mother, and O born outside the US, it would make no difference that his mother was a US citizen. At that time BOTH parents had to be US citizens if legally married. If the mother was unmarried, then her citizenship carried over to the child. But if the father was not married to the mother, and she was not a citizen, then neither was the child, even if the father was a citizen.

Here's the rule at that time for children born outside the US: married US citizen parents, child is a US citizen. Unmarried parents, child's citizenship follows the mother's citizenship. Obama is a US citizen because the marriage was void, since O Sr. was already married.

Exactly right. I normally like Diana’s columns, but this one flunks the smell test. Obama’s mother was a U.S. citizen in good standing (i.e., she had lived in the U.S. recently, and had not renounced her citizenship); therefore, BHO is a natural born citizen, whether he was born in Hawaii, Kenya, Kentucky, or the third moon of Saturn. I’m sure the Hawaiian birth certificate IS a fake – matters not a bit. There is no point to the birther movement. A lot of people have wasted a lot of energy that could have been better spent fighting his communist agenda.

You may agree or disagree with Obama's politics. The case for him being a natural born citizen is solid. Attacking politics that you disagree with is one thing. The attack on his status as a natural born citizen is somewhere south of being silly. This makes people question Diana Wests judgement and motavations

Interesting that you think that identity fraud "matters not a bit." It is a sad commentary on our society that the rich and powerful are above the law.

But if the birth certificate IS a fake, then that means Obama presented false legal documents and that is an impeachable offense in itself.

I still don't know if he really is a natural born citizen though. I have no way to know that given the circumstances. He was native born, but how do we know he is natural born?

The case is solid, but not for the reasons you think. Both sides assume it makes a difference where he was born. It doesn't. My other comments explain why. And believe me - I despise Obama, politically and personally, but the law's the law, and he's legally a US citizen.

Get ready for the last straw.

First, though, I'd like to suggest that anyone reading this column in a local newspaper or news site pat the editor on the back for publishing what in our neo-medieval world of fear amounts to a forbidden column.

Yup, I am about to say something about the Great Barack Obama Identity/Eligibility Scandal again. I know that this is one rich and urgent topic that doesn't see the light of day in certain so-called news outlets -- and I say that from the experience of watching my own syndicated columns fail to appear when covering news of the...
