Unfortunately most ideological extremists at both ends of the spectrum give the government waaay too much credit for having the abilities to resolve their personal concerns. To we social conservatives (a.k.a. Christian Right/Moral Majority, et al), if we are counting on the government to make the world a better place, we're setting ourselves up for a lifetime of disappointment. If the govt will simply stay out of the way, then the church functions as the church & is successful or not....and to y'all on the far left, you've had the most progressive/liberal president, senate for the last 6 years and started the 8 year Obama cycle with all branches of government leaning your way & yet, you're not satisfied that enough has been done.....let the government do it's constitutionally appointed functions (disappointing all activists) and let the market place of ideas do its work....all else is frustration. lc

Equality of Outcome is impossible as a practical matter. Places like Bangladesh, Haiti & Cuba are the closest to equality....and they still have the prosperous very few....on the other extreme Grand Cayman is as near to an affluent equality on the surface as a location has come....but not on closer examination. Look at the differences of the governments and philosophies directing the peoples & economies to see the WHY.

Cruz Control?

It's these two lines that scare me....and this, I imagine to be very much based in historical reality: "The political majority could have united to stop Hitler from becoming a dictator. But they did not unite. They fought each other over their differences.".... What a dilemma....like so many, I, too am a huge fan of both Dr Sowell and Mr. Cruz. Call me a moderate, if you must....but I am inclined to take the best from both....Mr. Cruz inspires confidence with his leadership style & principles...and Dr Sowell has the firmest of all grasps on the obvious....but both would readily admit that neither is anywhere near perfection.....and in this world, that choice will never be on our ballot....I fear that many of us tend to want a one time, final fix.....(not sure if that is unbridled optimism or lazy....) but the reality is unfortunately that will never happen. Imagine with me a minute....fantasize may be a better word......Let's imagine Mr Cruze as our president, say Ron Paul as Treasury Secretary, Dr Sowell as Commerce Secretary, Allen West as Secretary of Defense....John Bolton as Secretary of state.....all serving for a full two terms / 8 years.....that means that in 2024 the progressives will be loaded for bear & the battle will never end....so we have no reason to assume that anyONE will be our political "salvation". Let the battle for the hearts and minds of America continue.

I never question the intellect & the honor that most of the right embody....what I am wondering is among all this "silent (no more) majority" is there not one who speaks with the passion and "salesmanship" needed to communicate the constitutional conservative story? It seems that any name mentioned gets shot down to their lack of purity....are y'all serious?

Thanks, Earl. That is perfectly rational (even by Dr Sowell's definition)...as it IS the only way to negotiate the ways of the world....unfortunately the political process has deteriorated.....it may be that the only solution is to replace the political class & since I am too old and chicken to get into a fight that I personally would likely not win, we constitutional conservatives need to make a point of getting the better candidate in every race ...with the caution directed to them that if principles are not held to, they will be out in the proscribed timeframe. If we wait for pure perfection before we go to the polls, we will forevermore come out in third place....sorry to ramble....

Dr. Sowell, I have more respect for you than any 2 or 3 combined of the prominent leaders in the current confusion that is 21st century America....but this article has conflicted me....I hope that this gets to your attention so that you can have the opportunity to clarify my confusion.....it seems that what is needed according to this very reasonable article is that while the tea party needs to cling desperately to its principles that at the same time it needs to display and exercise the political savvy to negotiate the tangled web of governmental legislative chaos. Not sure how those of us who by definition are NOT professional politicians can expect to compete in their environment. Any suggestions?

The Problem With Libertarians

Maybe.....IF the only option is the "pure" / "perfection" or nothing, yeah.....
OK.....two points need to understood here....first, we are a representative republic and as a conservative, it is completely up to the voters in any given disctrict, state or nation to choose their representation.....you're giving Cruz waaay too much credit....folks in Virginia or Georgia can't be motivated to vote by Cruze swooping in to save the day, if they are not fans of the often lukewarm campaigns being run. The second point is this....one of the largest reasons for mediocre republican turnout is due to the majority of opinions expressed here......."this guy Cruz isn't the perfect representative or campaigner.....SO, he deserves to be removed from the Senate" .....hmmm & we're going to replace him with the perfect candidate as soon as we find them......rrrrriiiight......y'all think about it.
