The Limits of Power

Somebody needs to put down their bong for a second and think about what they're saying. Folks on the right are "scofflaws" that pick and choose what laws they wish to follow?

The foundation beneath this discussion is that we love our Constitution and we love our country and we are 1) dismayed that the Presidency and the Congress are not obeying the laws of the Constitution and thus obliging all Americans to follow laws that are unconstitutional and harmful to our progress as a nation and 2) intent on taking hold of the remnants of our elegant system of checks and balances and putting a stop to it.

Also? lilly? Are you going to tell me that a slave who runs away from his master is a degenerate scofflaw? Dude, you just...

Are Republicans "Due"?: Part III

I find it hard to believe that the "black community" is so uniform in its attitudes and failings as y'all seem to suggest. I think the black community is as diverse in intelligence and strength as any other community, and that the Republicans and/or conservatives could only gain by approaching this community with the message "I know you want better and you're willing to work for it, and our policies will give you a chance to do so."

If I'm right, you may be surprised by how many people in the community rise to the challenge and find inspiration in being taken seriously. And if I'm wrong, what does the GOP have to lose -- certainly not their dignity, because what Dr. Sowell is suggesting is that we try NOT pandering.

Haiti's Avoidable Death Toll

Word. But as long as SOME people work so very, very hard at remaining ignorant of these facts, we're going to continue to be menaced by these lunatic socialist schemes.

First off, "In one respect this fool got is right." is not a sentence; it's, like, a Boggle list or something.

Secondly, the reason why respected economists such as Walter Williams have a great deal to contribute to political commentary is because politics and economics are inextricably linked. For instance, why don't you tell me all about a Communist government, that, by definition, oppresses and/or controls the free market, which is NOT corrupt?

Thirdly, apparently you skipped high school economics as often as you skipped English, as you seem to have missed the concept that free market (capitalism) leads to competition which leads to lowering of prices. Whereas government interference and control tends to lead to...

Haiti's Avoidable Death Toll

Driving in this morning and listening to a phone-a-thon to raise money for Haiti, I just kept grumbling to myself, "If I could get my hands on one of those corrupt Haitian official and point out to them that the magnitude of this disaster is ALL THEIR FAULT."

But Dr. Williams said it for me and said it better. Wil and harmony have both asked good questions.
Another name for mining private speech for "insights" is gossip, and it sells, so the media loves it and there are a million idiots out there who are going to eat it up. And since it came from the media, it must be True and Important and therefore drive our public policy.

And I like the comparison to Stasi and the KGB -- how is political correctness, as a form of speech oppression, any different? In fact, in terms of insidious effectiveness, it's that much scarier.

Eeesh. Just gives me the shivers thinking about it.

Fatherhood by Billboard?

1) and didn't think it promoted marriage at all but rather said, "It's cool your a babydaddy and all, but you gotta step up, y'know?" and am just THRILLED to know my tax dollars are paying for that message.

2) and my 7 year old son had to have it explained to him why such an obvious sentiment merited a billboard. I hope that means I'm doing something right.

Following the Irish Example

In both the centuries-long view and the decades short view, Ireland has done a stunning job of developing and maintaining its economy. As Rich points out, that comes in part from learning from its mistakes. I'm glad someone has taken the time to point out a success story we could learn from.

The Census and the Constitution

I just learned that our school district is now required to assign a race to Hispanic students -- i.e. "Hispanic + caucasian" or "Hispanic + native American". If parents or students refuse to self-identify, the staff has been told to "look at the kid and figure it out." Never mind that the racial identifications have little to do with Hispanic perceptions of their own background, never mind that it's intrusive and pushy and a waste of everybody's time and money. In many cases there's no way to make an accurate identification, and who does it help when they do?

I called the state Ed. department and they said they had no choice, 'cause the Feds told them to do it. End of discussion. It's this bend-over-and-take-it attitude that...
