Some nutcases think that one solution would be for teachers and administrators to start packing heat in the schools. I can't think of anything more ridiculous. Aside from what this is telling students, it would probably lead to more violence. I can easily imagine large male students assaulting teachers in order to get their gun. A terrified teacher may feel they need to shoot a student ("stand your ground?"). Let's not lose sight of the fact that, in a country of over 300 million, 99+% of our schools are safe.

We can't afford paying armed guards or police and metal detectors at every school entrance in the nation,BUT,allowing armed school employees who have carry permits costs nothing, and puts armed GOOD people right where they would be needed all the time the school is open, close to the children that need protecting.
It's also a PROVEN-to-work method.(Israel does it,and it works there,against real terrorists.)

We could afford paying a small bonus to those school employees who get their permit and come to school armed on a regular basis,to encourage more of them to do it.

concealed carry permit holders have PROVEN themselves to be safe and law-abiding. they are not going to act any different on school grounds than they do elsewhere in public places. They have already established a SUPERB record in EVERY state that issues CCW permits.THEY are not any danger or threat to other lawful citizens or children.

Also,Israel had this same problem, with PLO shooting up their schools, and they allowed armed school employees, and IT WORKED. the school attacks by the PLO stopped.
(after the next PLO attack was shot up,a nasty surprise for them, expecting defenseless Israelis)

teachers are already being attacked
they would be safe if they had a gun
you don't attack anyone with a gun if you don't have one yourself
unarmed teachers are only a good thing if you don't trust them with your kids
solve both problems by home schooling
"No set of laws can eliminate evil from the world, or prevent every senseless act of violence in our society."

So said President Obama in words of comfort in Newtown. The president was right to speak of evil, but mistaken when he called the massacre "senseless."

For this was a premeditated and purposeful act of mass murder, and the devil that did it knew exactly what he was doing and why.

When he put four bullets into his mother's head while she lay in bed, Adam Lanza wanted her life ended along with his. When he headed for Sandy Hook Elementary,...
