(from part 2 above) While I feel that we should not try to bring European attitudes such as socialism to the United States, I feel that one area in which the Europeans have one up on us is on the subject of sexual conduct! In spite of having a rate of sexual activity that is as great if not greater than it is here in the 'States, their rate of teen pregnancies is much lower. In one country, the Netherlands, the rate of teen pregnancies is ONE-NINTH of what it is here in the 'States! Because European attitudes toward sexuality are different from ours and we here in the 'States are living in a state of denial, I feel we should look to Europe and see how they do things with regard to these issues.

Do House Republicans risk being branded as extremist and out of touch by bringing abortion back into the national spotlight when supposedly the economy is all Americans care about today?

Last Thursday, Republicans brought to a vote in the House a bill introduced by Arizona Republican Trent Franks that would have criminalized abortion based on sex. Although the bill received healthy support, 246 – 168, including 20 Democrats that voted for it, it was not enough to pass. The floor rule under which the bill was considered required a two thirds vote for passage and it fell short of that.
