The 16T debt exists mostly because the politicians have learned that they can buy votes with the public treasury, and too many of the people willingly vote for those politicians that offer the most "free" stuff. If the majority of the people would have held the politicians accountable for their fiscal irresponsibility by voting them out of office, we wouldn't have nearly so much debt.

If laws were enough to deter criminal behavior prisons would be empty.

The latest effort to "control" guns in America is as likely to deter someone intent on breaking the law as outlawing lust would affect one's libido. What's in a heart can't be controlled by restricting what's in a hand.
