Immigration Gambles

It's a shame that we have evolved so far into our entitlement era that the underlying problem isn't even discussed. Our social programs, started as the "Great Society," contain perverse incentives that discourage marriage, work, saving money, and even co-habitation with a bread-winner. These policies have decimated our inner-city poor populations in a way that one can hardly believe we will ever reverse. It's a major scandal of our age that Democrats refuse to look at this problem logically and attempt to fix it. These same entitlement programs contain the same perverse incentives that attract the exact opposite immigrant population from the one that would really benefit us. Thus our schizophrenia on the issue.

If we were to address this problem systemically we could solve several problems at once. Immigration is good for this country, especially as our birth rate slips below replacement and baby-boomers leave the workplace for Social Security and Medicare.
But we're killing ourselves with the moral certainty that we have to provide more and more free stuff even as we see the tragic effect of it, the poverty, ignorance, crime and violence now several generations deep and unlikely to spontaneously cure itself. This issue needs attention.
I'm not a believer in government as the solution, but when government policy is as destructive as these programs we can't solve the problem until the policies are changed.

The Boston bombers were legal immigrants -- was that good? You fall too easily into cliched points. Yes, all of illegal immigration is bad. But a sizeable portion of our legal immigration is equally flawed. No skills, no money, no education -- we don't want you here illegally or legally.

Britain's late Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher said it all when she wrote that the world has "never ceased to be dangerous," but the West has "ceased to be vigilant."

Nothing better illustrates her point than the fact that the West has imported vast numbers of people who hate our guts and would love to slit our throats. Political correctness has replaced self-preservation. The Boston Marathon killer who set a bomb down right next to an eight-year-old child is only the latest in an on-going series of such people.

Senator Patrick Leahy has warned us not to use the Boston Marathon terrorists as an...
