Engineers do not make the decisions at GM, automakers. Decisions have always been made by marketing execs. It used to be big engines shoehorned into cars they didn't fit. If you ever tried to work on your car, you saw the problem. Engineers are actually better than that. You can get incompetent engineers, but not stupid ones. I never had any stupid students in engineering.

I am an engineer, but in my experience the engineers shouldn't be driving product development. The companies I have worked for were the product specs were driven by the engineers produced technically cool products but they were so expensive that no one wanted to buy them. The prospective customer reaction upon hearing the price was usually, "You are joking, right?" The most successful company I worked for had marketing people with engineering backgrounds and negotiated product specs with engineering. This addressed market needs tempered with feasibility. GM's problem is either incompetent marketing people and/or government interference producing product for government goals/ideology.

Awww, heck, I thought not leaving any room in the engine compartment was purposeful so that to do anything, the engine needed to be pulled. Keeps the dealerships busy. Snap-On guys, too, selling all those specialty tools.

After a year that can only be described as “stupid,” the Chevy Volt is gearing up to make 2013 even stupider still.

I know, I know.

You find it hard to believe that a mostly-owned subsidiary of the United States government and the Obama administration- like GM is- could get any stupider than say Fannie Mae, or Federal Reserve Bank.

Yes, that’s tough competition, but in the “idiocy” category GM seems to be the ruling champion.

Not only have they lost substantial amounts of taxpayer dollars, they have managed to do it while generating record profits...
