This is one of the most ridiculous claims I've ever heard. Two weeks before Joe McCarthy's speech, the Truman administration had quoted Proverbs in defense of a proven traitor (Alger Hiss), whom it had defended tooth and nail. The idea that Truman had done any purge flies in the face of reason and common sense, and likewise the idea that it was done with by the time McCarthy stepped onto the scene.

Freshman Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas is just the latest in a long series of public figures to be reviled for "McCarthyism" following his recent questioning of Chuck Hagel, President Obama's nominee for secretary of defense. The response? Conservatives have rushed to defend their own against the charge. To understate the case, that's not enough. It's time to debunk McCarthyism itself.
