10 Things to Know for Friday

"Cuba's company comes up with a pair of colognes for the discerning supporter of international socialism honoring guerrilla leader Ernesto "Che" Guevara and late Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez." Considering that Guevara was referred to as "the pig" in his college days, maybe smelling like him would be a bad idea. Then again, the stuff would probably be blood-scented, if they wanted to get it accurate.

Why should we play with the demographics of a police department? Why should we pretend that the residents of Ferguson are only trying to be polite when they're either burning along with the out-of-towners or looking the other way? It's nice of you to try to compromise--but it takes two.

What if a bunch of blatantly false accusations were true? Well, then we'd all be very surprised--and the libertarians would actually have a point.

Cancel the Unethical 'Daily Show'

The left has gotten fairly good at using these serious-not-serious shows to advance their agenda. When "The DaVinci Code" came out, we were told over and over again that there was nothing to get upset over because it was just a fictional story--and then every time we looked away someone would be on the news explaining what the book "proved." Likewise, whenever someone gets offended that Stewart or Maher or one of their ilk pulls one of their usual stunts, we're told that it's a comedy show, and we shouldn't expect accuracy or integrity--but as soon as we're not looking they're shouting about how something from one of these shows must be fact. It's part of the usual Leftist strategy--if you can't argue the points you're making, then say them in a way that nobody's allowed to speak against them. Talk about setting a high tone while you're cronies roll out the slander, or call your opponent a racist, or trot out a grieving widow or mother to use as a shield/mouthpiece, or if you're on a college campus just give up all pretense and have the other side arrested and expelled if they try to speak.
Moreover, military protocol makes it clear that you ~are~ allowed to salute with your right hand while carrying something in your left. Not even bothering to switch hands, on the other hand, is pretty indicative of a deep disrespect.

I mostly got that idea from libertarian policies. If you want to pretend that libertarianism--as practices, if not in theory--is blatantly anti-Christian, then more power to you.... but don't expect the rest of us to pretend with you.

--So if heroin were legalized tomorrow, we'd all be sticking needles in our arms by Saturday?-- Guns are legal. Does everybody own one? Alcohol was once illegal. Once it was legalized, did everyone in the country get drunk? Drugs ~should~ be legalized, but let's not start any utopian rants about how once we make it easier to get drugs nobody will do them anymore, (and also let's not toss Portugal on the table without also pointing out they ran a lot of government programs--something that libertarians are supposedly against--to reduce the drug rate, or the fact that drug trafficking is still vigorously prosecuted)
Every lawyer who tries to push this idiocy needs to be disbarred.

Meanwhile, telling somebody "what you're really saying" instead of addressing what they did say is a classic example of a strawman argument. I just what universe is claiming that your opponent wants women to be raped an murdered somehow an acceptable argument? If that's what passes for argument on the Dailykos boards, you need to stay there.

In other news, I have decided that I'm no longer going to lock my doors and windows. I shouldn't be expected to follow basic security or safety procedures, or take any measures to protect myself--we should just teach people not to burglarize.

About banning abortions I make no apologies and have no need for them--laws refusing murder are perfectly permissible within a small government. About banning drugs I have no defense. When it comes to "gay marriage" on the other hand, the libertarian position--were it consistent--would be to refuse the government the right to shut down businesses and charities for refusing to spit in God's face. The idea that bakers and photographers and landowners could be slammed with massive fines for refusing to take part in a homosexual ceremony ~should~ horrify any libertarian.... But when it happens to Christians, libertarians are cool with government control.
