Your experiment with the Salvation Army donations is very slanted and misleading. I donate more to charities than a lot of people I know, but as a non-theist I restrict my donations to secular charities. I know many humanists, atheists, agnostics, etc who do the same. Your experiment didn't prove that people in liberal, free thinking San Francisco are any less charitable, but just that they give less to one old, stodgy evangelical charity.
