I take umbrage to the hackneyed phrase, "it could have happened to any of us."

Here's who could be an adulterer: someone who has no respect for their spouse. Someone who does not have real empathy (the ability to connect with the feelings of others) can also be an adulterer. Someone who disagrees with the Commandment forbidding adultery. Someone who puts his/her wants over the needs of their family. But especially inherent in adultery is a capacity, however short-lived, for hatred. It has always been my contention that in order to shame and destroy the trust and dignity of a mate, the adulterer must bake his temptation in a flame of hate.
