Mark, first of all most of us are paying into social security for a paltry return that we will probably never see. And if you are married, you will collect benefits from your spouse from a system you never paid into. Congrats on your education but research shows that it doesn't improve your effectiveness as a teacher and other jobs don't pay more based on the education level or additional "units" or clock hours. Finally, aren't students held accountable through grades? I completely agree with you on parents-no reason not to require some effort from them. However, what do you do when they don't comply, throw the student out of school? That punishes them even more for their bad luck in the lottery of life.

Dot32 - as one of the many dedicated and hard-working teachers, don't you resent the fact that the unions work so hard to protect the teachers who shouldn't be there? The headlines end up reflecting poorly on all teachers, and that is not fair. I don't think anything will change until the good teachers, who make up the vast majority, take a stand and start demanding accountability from their peers and their unions. How fair is it when you get the students from Smith's class from the article - they lost a whole year of learning and now you struggle to make that up!
So making 50% more than the average city worker for about half as many annual hours is not greedy? Of course teaching is hard - so are most jobs! The supply of would-be teachers far exceeds the demand-an indication of the fact that the benefits of the job far exceed those in competing professions. The only way a principal can turn around a failing school is to have full autonomy over his staff, and the union wants to keep their own control, continuing the cycle of failure. Who is looking out for the kids? If the rules are so unfair to these teachers, then step aside and give someone new the change to experience the job. It is not fair to students to be taught by people who are obviously so unhappy with their profession.

The Blatant Bias With the Wives

Don't forget that Ann Romney is criticized for devoting her life to raising her own 5 children, but Michelle Obama is "mom-in-chief" because she wants to tell the rest of us what to do with our kids while her mother is the primary caretaker of her own kids. As a women who has done it both ways, I am in favor of freedom of choice to do what works for your own family. How about the media's "War on Women" who don't make the choice that they believe is correct?
Mr. Hawkins, you need to add a #6: When a black American dares to support any conservative ideas, they are subject to personal destruction. This is not limited to prominent people. You have to possess an extremely thick skin to put up with the degrading and racist comments that are thrown at any minority who dares to express an individual opinion. The left has it both ways. They continue to decry the lack of conservative minorities, but as soon as a minority expresses some conservative ideas, the left goes on attack, and the mainstream media refuses to call them out on it. Examples: Artur Davis, Mia Love, Condoleeza Rice, Allen West. Artur Davis was called an "Uncle Tom" just because he opposed ObamaCare.
