Here's one possible reason. Most American young people are brought up to believe in the rule of law and to obey properly constituted authority. Those of us who have been exposed to real life, unlike most college students, tend to take a more realistic view and act accordingly. Students, by and large, have never had to be responsible for anything, including their own safety.
