I agree with the sentiments of this article. But I object to the continued use of the word "liberal' to refer to leftists and regressives. Liberalism originally described the philosophy of Thomas Jefferson and gradually came to represent the opposite of his ideas. Conservatives should stop using the term to describe leftists. If the term goes unused for a sufficient period of time, perhaps the right can reclaim it for the ideas of Jefferson.
I'm glad to see the Tea Party called out for their opposition to immigration. Our ridiculous immigration quota system is comparable to placing a 15 mph speed limit on the Interstate and then working oneself up into a lather about all the illegal speeders. Now if only someone will call out the Tea Party for their opposition to the individual rights of women seeking an abortion and the right of same sex couples to get married.

The GOP's Immigration Mess

Immigration is an individual rights issue--the right to move yourself and your family to an environment where you can get ahead by hard work and industriousness. Setting a quota to a tiny percentage of those who wish to move here violates the rights of honest hard-working people. Those coming here illegally would prefer to come here legally, but they are not allowed to because of our insane quota system. It's akin to putting a 15 mph speed limit on the interstate highways. If you want to have scoff-laws, pass a stupid law.
The Republicans are way too timid. The federal government needs permanent partial shut-down and Republicans should be drafting a plan to make that happen. One never makes gains by making timid demands of the opposition. Start by planning how to eliminate about ten of the fifteen Executive Departments, leaving perhaps only Defense, State, Justice, Treasury and Interior. It would be necessary to eliminate or phase out most of the laws and regulations currently administered by those agencies. Any legitimate functions could be transferred to Interior after selling off all western Federal lands and US Parks. Veterans Affairs could be transferred to Defense. In short, Republicans need to scare the hell out of Democrats or they will not budge.
I believe it is time for we Republicans to base our political principles on the concept of individual rights and government limited to protecting those rights. When we start trying to mix religion and politics we go astray. The Republican Party needs to become a secular party.
I must also say that I am astonished at the poverty of soul displayed by some of the comments to this article. It reminds me of the hatred that Germans expressed towards the Jews in the 1930s. Hopefully the remarks expressed by some against this article are the rantings of an over wrought minority and not the sentiments of thoughtful conservatives.
Thank you Mr. Bower for this dose of good sense. Stringent immigration quotas effectively make immigration to this country illegal except for a tiny privileged few. The quotas make about as much sense as a 15 mph speed limit on the interstate highways with analogous results. Few people recall that the whole situation began when the Bracero program was halted back in the 70s because of labor union opposition. Mexican workers moved back and forth across the border freely with their green cards, working for a season then returning to their families in Mexico. When the program ended after working successfully for decades the workers faced the prospect of poverty for their families or sneaking back across the border into the US to stay.

Illegal Immigrants, Not So Illegal

Eight hundred years ago, the Mexica indians left their drought ruined farms in the American Southwest and moved to present day Mexico where they were the lowest of the low and had to settle on swamp land in the middle of a lake--land unwanted and unused by the 'legal' citizens of Mexico. In a span of 200 years, because of their drive and industry, they became the prosperous ruling class of Mexico. Now their descendants are returning to the lands they once ruled, as the lowest of the low, taking jobs the legal residents don't want. Let us not make the mistakes of the Mexicans of 1200 AD. Rather, let us welcome them back home.

Then I should be shot as a traitor. You would have been more at home in Germany in the 1930s.
