Digital Medical Hubris

Both my doctor and the nurse spend more time filling in the blanks on their laptops during a visit than they do focusing on the patient!... In the last 3 visits, 4 corrections were made as we talked! Wouldn't expensive doctor time be better spent diagnosing a patient and taking notes, then letting an office typist input the info? I sure would feel a lot more confident in my doctor being a doctor rather than a data typist!

my dentist switched to a digital system, and it works great. they take hi-res pics of my teeth, even X-rays,and it all goes in the record, and can be displayed on the monitor in the room so I can see it.
And the appointment and billing system is part of it. it's very efficient.

It's the doctor's responsiblity to "write" the medical record. He or she has to do it. I am sure your doctor would rather be a doctor than a typist, but the feds have left them with no choice. If you want to receive reimbursement for Medicare and Medicaid, you must comply.

many doctors are DROPPING Medicare/Medicaid. Not taking any new patients, period.
some are going on a cash-only basis; you pay,and you seek reimbursement from your insurance.

So you expect eye contact and communication? That's not what the bureaucrats want. They want easily collated and analyzed data. Rapport and communication, as well as care centered on the INDIVIDUAL are casualties of the new world of federally mandated care. Get used to it. I used to be able to allow patient visit times adequate to deal with each patient. I cannot endure the new world of cattle yard medicine and have left active patient care. One less doctor to call when you hit the windshield at 2 A.M. or accidentally saw a finger off in the table saw.

That's sad, but totally understandable. I'm a midwife, and do all my records by hand, and will continue to do so...I think the contents will be safer...
Now the other shoes begin to drop. Voters knew in November that many of the promises Obama made in 2008 had been broken. The economy had not revived as he had promised it would ("or we'll be talking about a one-term proposition"). He has not "changed the tone in Washington" -- except for the worse. He didn't prevent lobbyists from holding positions in his administration. He didn't cut the deficit in half; he increased it radically. But voters apparently decided that the president deserved credit for good intentions.

How long will that indulgence last? The next four years, whatever else...
