If you look at the deadliest hurricanes in the Atlantic (Wikipedia has a nice article on the subject) you will see that the list has many entries for the 18th, 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries. Mega storms have always happened but they are getting more and more costly as we have more stuff to loose in the storms.
