The main reason why Galileo was censored was not because of his revolutionary views but because his views at the time could not be proven by 17th century science. It was only decades later that his "earth centered" theory could be proved.

In the meantime he continued to teach the Copernican view ( a catholic priest) as fact. This is what got in him in hot water.

Jesuit Cardinal Robert Bellarmine noted that if the Copernican theory was ever proven then it would be necessary to re-think the interpretation of certain Scriptural passages.

It was Martin Luther, calling Copernicus a fool, savaged his theory, as did John Calvin.

Most of the early scientific progress in astronomy was rooted in the Catholic Church....
