The massive increase in Social Security Disability applications means that even the legitimately disabled must wait an average two years or more to have their applications approved. Another interesting factor is the impact of child support obligations. A successful Social Security Disability application results in a retroactive award of past-due benefits (an attorney representing someone in a successful case is entitled to a percentage of that award). If the applicant owes back child support, the support collection office will request a court order to place a lien on the award, to be applied to unpaid child support. Since some of that support is owed to the state to reimburse welfare, the state gets repaid (a fraction) also!
