Countries don't die and economies don't collapse they just stagnate until conquered or gradually disintegrate. The threat is to French banks and bureaucrats and in general, the political and financial elite in both France and Germany. Protecting those elite by further centralizing power doesn’t prevent collapse it makes stagnation and eventual conquest more likely. Free trade in Europe was the good, indeed wonderful, but a single currency and centralization threatens it and the sooner it is reversed the better.

But with Sunday's returns from France and Greece, the mega-trends on the Old Continent are unmistakable. And for the European Union, they are ominous.

Nationalism -- be it economic nationalism or ethnic nationalism -- is ascendant. Transnationalism and multiculturalism are in headlong if not irreversible retreat. The European project is itself imperiled.
