Dress Rehearsal for a Mideast War?

When Buchanan speaks the comments quickly turn anti or pro Israel. The subject isn’t Israel. It’s the US and whether we should get involved in a civil war which we cannot control and in which there are no vital US interests which we can significantly influence, let alone control. He’s advising caution and using the Spanish civil war as an example. A reasonable commentary on both civil wars.

Pat is right in that America's foreign policy should place America first. This means, 99 out of 100 times, STAYING OUT OF WARS. Unless we are in danger of imminent invasion (hint: we aren't), then our policy with the rest of the world should be "friendly commerce with all nations, entangling alliances with none."

"Entangling alliances" includes Israel.

Yes, Washington and the others were right about this. It is why whenever it is pointed out the neocons and their myrmidons either avoid the advice or pipe up with "that was fine for the 18th Century but not today". The advice is timeless and has proven to be correct as the last 22 years of overseas meddling have shown to those who will use their eyes to see.

King -- the neocons are actually leftists. Trotskyites to be exact.

King,

Are you aware that no less than Bill Kristol called Obama a neocon over the Libyan fiasco, right? I thought so, absolutely clueless. This happens when you get all your "news" and opinions shaped for you by low IQ talk radio and cable tv.

The reason for this is that the neocons want the US involved in this mess. For them, US foreign policy should revolve around Israel instead of America. This is the elephant in the living room and the Israel firsters are usually the ones to invoke Israel not only to engage in a pity party by bringing up the holocaust but also to smear those of us who want an America first foreign policy as "antisemites" if the former doesn't get the desired results.

"History does not repeat itself, but it often rhymes," said Mark Twain.

Observing the uprising in Syria, the atrocities, the intervention by rival powers, it all calls to mind the Great Rehearsal for World War II, the Spanish Civil War.

The war began in 1936 with an uprising in Morocco of Spanish Nationalists against a Madrid regime seen as anti-Catholic, Marxist and Trotskyite. Vladimir Lenin had predicted that Spain would be the second Soviet republic in Europe.

The war would last three years, with Joseph Stalin providing aid to the regime, Benito Mussolini sending troops to fight...
