also does not give the schools an excuse to raise tuitions, because now only the ones that truely want a degree are in school, The rest are going on with what ever pursuits they want. Bottom line whether they work to get a degree or not, without a student loan, they are not deeply in debt before they even consider major purchases like a house. Its just like welfare, you want to give the money away for the best of reasons, and there are many out there that will accept it for the smallest of reasons. One more example is the tax credits for solar. Say the solar cost $20K before the credit, Gov gives a $10k tax credit, all of a sudden solar costs $30k???????????? HMMMM, politicians think companies are stupid????

Charles, I do enjoy your articles. I agree with all the above, except the student loans.Who ever started them must have worked for colleges and universities. Figuring if they give free mooney to students for education, then they could raise tuition and other fees and increase the money paid to the schools. They were right. Who ever initiated the loans should be run out of town. If you give a teenager a car, then they will run it into the ground, not realizing they may actually need it as part of their life. If they have to pay for the car, it will be washed and waxed regulary, and taken care of as their own property. If a student has to work or the parents have to pay for school, there is always a greater appreciation of the opportunity. It
History Burgeoning numbers of Mexican migrants prompted President Eisenhower to appoint General Joseph Swing as INS Commissioner. According to Attorney General Herbert Brownell, Jr., Eisenhower had a sense of urgency about illegal immigration upon taking office. In a letter to Senator J. William Fulbright, Eisenhower quoted a report in The New York Times that said, "The rise in illegal border-crossing by Mexican 'wetbacks' to a current rate of more than 1,000,000 cases a year has been accompanied by a curious relaxation in ethical standards extending all the way from the farmer-exploiters of this contraband labor to the highest levels of the Federal Government
continued: accord. To discourage illicit re-entry, buses and trains took many deportees deep within Mexican territory before releasing them. Tens of thousands more were deported by two chartered ships: the Emancipation and the Mercurio. The ships ferried them from Port Isabel, Texas, to Veracruz, Mexico, more than 500 miles (800 km) to the south. Some were taken as far as 1,000 miles (1,600 km). Deportation by sea was ended after seven deportees jumped overboard from the Mercurio and drowned, provoking a mutiny that led to a public outcry in Mexico
I like Ike's cure. from Wikipedia: Operation Wet-back in action The effort began in California and Arizona in 1954 and coordinated 1,075 Border Patrol agents, along with state and local police agencies. Tactics employed included going house to house in Mexican-American neighborhoods and citizenship checks during standard traffic stops. Some 750 agents targeted agricultural areas with a goal of 1,000 apprehensions per day. By the end of July, over 50,000 illegal aliens were caught in the two states. An estimated 488,000 illegal aliens are believed to have left voluntarily, for fear of being apprehended. By September, 80,000 had been taken into custody in Texas, and the INS estimated that 500,000 to 700,000 had left Texas of their own accor

Was it worth it? YES YES YES, What were the mistakes? For some reason our idiot politicians think that we have to convert them to a democracy, its not going to happen. Our biggest mistake was staying. The continuing mistake is we are still there. We have to engage the enemies from time to time, but once they are defeated, we need to leave as we did the first time.
