The adults in this situation are going to take control, christie gave a dose of that tonight, ryan will give some more soon. This whole thing reminds me of packing a bag and attempting to run away from my house when I was 8. My parents just laughed and let me do it, I got to the curb and sat there for 15 minutes before running back home. I think the adults are going to win in this situation eventually, the question is how much damage will be done in the meantime. It has to be an inflate out of it strategy on the other side, there is clearly no grow out of it even being considered. Those guys don't have a clue how to grow anything, except maybe fantasies.

Ravitch authored _The Language Police_ (also a mandatory read).

_The Death of the Grownup_ is by Diana West.

My error entirely; please accept my apologies.

For those of us who like to believe that human beings are rational, trying to explain what happens in politics can be a real challenge.

For example, that segment of the population that has the least to fear from a reform of Medicare or Social Security is the most fearful -- namely, those already receiving Medicare or Social Security benefits.

It is understandable that people heavily dependent on these programs would fear losing their benefits, especially after a lifetime of paying into these programs. But nobody in his right mind has even proposed taking away the...
