Prohibition of alcohol failed because the demand for alcohol (and the potential profits) were so great as to create a black market that could not be eliminated. Organized crime, violent gangs, increased costs of law enforcement, prosecution and imprisonment---all spelled doom for prohibition. Sound familiar? We have exactly the same situation in the war on drugs. Why is alcohol favored and marijuana frowned upon by the ruling class? When will we put the focus on punishing bad behavior (such as drunk driving) and stop punishing the simple possession and use of pleasure-enhancing substances?
