If I thought that the Left was stupid and didn't realize what they were doing in the context of history I wouldn't be so worried. But I don't think they're stupid, I think they're very smart. A very bad kind of smart but smart nonetheless.

The reason I use my kids as an example, and why others do it as well, is because you are supposed to make your judgement applied to whether or not you'd want that for the future of the country and for the people you care about the most. And you're right in saying I don't have the right to tell you what to do. So long as what you believe are your rights don't extend beyond the point to where they start to invade on what are considered to be the same rights as others. But comparing the rights of an adult and the rights of a child is like comparing apples and oranges. Only because overall kids are impressionable and don't know any better. That's why liberals get so much of the 18-25 age bracket at the polls.

Freedom to me...

If someone was selling my kids meth now I could find that person and turn him in to face the consequences. There are consequences to face for something that is illegal that act as a deterrent or punishment to doing that particular activity. I believe in freedom but I also believe in law.

You see I'm a nurse and at the hospital there are two diagnoses that are more popular than any others. COPD exacerbation secondary to a history of smoking and Pancreatitis secondary to ETOH(alcohol overdose). We get so many of these because smoking and drinking are legal and socially acceptable. We get meth and cocaine overdoses as well but the numbers are nowhere near as high as the two others. That would change if it were legalized. If...

When comparing the number of people who try a drug to the number of people who become addicted, I think you have to understand the reasons why they don't allow themselves to become addicted, which is ultimately what has to happen on a psychological level to become addicted. The reason why the number of people who try it is low compared to the number who become addicted is because of the social stigma generated by it being illegal in the first place. If you take that number away it will become more socially acceptable and the number of users will increase. Our country will suffer under too much moral flexibility John. I want drugs as unavailable to my kids as possible.

Are Republicans "Due"?

I always hear pundits talking about "moving forward" and "looking ahead". But the way to fix our country does not lie in moving towards the future. Rather, it lies in looking to the past, back to our founding principles. This requires Conservatives/Republicans/Libertarians to strip entitlements given by the corrupt to people and in place giving back their rights. Since entitlements are a little more tangible to ignorant people than rights and since our society, generally speaking, is ignorant, this will not be a popular thing. It doesn't matter what we chose to call ourselves. What matters is that we come together and educate. Our right side of government relies on popularity as much as our left side to get re-elected. So that is...

Great article as always! With a perfect ending! God bless James Madison! God bless Thomas Jefferson! God bless George Will for his mastery of the First Amendment. And last but most certainly not least, God bless the United States of America!

I enjoy the articles that Dr. Sowell and others post so much that I sometimes post them on my Facebook page. (under the Notes section) By doing this I've brought excellent Conservative arguments on current events to others that may not have been exposed to such opinions. I believe Facebook is a way we can reach out to others and bypass our corrupt media. I know I've changed many people's minds. Hopefully other Conservatives will step up to the plate. It would be a shame not to share such thoughtful insight.

The second to last paragraph is an excellent summation of the point you are making in this article.
