There's no doubt that the governments can and do commit greater evil than even the biggest corporations. Fearing big government IS rational. Fearing big business is also rational, if kept in perspective. Exxon isn't going to come in the night and haul me off to a secret prison. Leftists who talk about corporations as if they had police power are wing nuts. The problem with big business is that they can and do commit petty evil on a regular basis. Living in the USA, I don't fear random arrest, but I regularly feel like I'm being shafted by a large corporation. I fear nuclear terrorism, and I fear snakes. Where I live, snakes are a common hazard. It's rational for me to fear both.

Dennis, you might want to Think A Second Time about that. "There's a lot of luck in life" is the foundation of egalitarian liberalism. If luck plays a large role in the outcome of people's lives, the lucky should be forced to share the fruits of their luck with the unlucky. After all, they didn't really "earn" it -- they were just lucky.
