Let me begin by saying that as a fellow service member (I am a Navy submarine officer), I am grateful to Mr. Luttrell for his service. That being said, he couldn't be more wrong about the spirit of our rules of engagement (ROE). The considerations for following those guidelines should not be about a fear of prosecution by "the liberals", it is about the underlying principles of our nation that go into developing those ROE. The whole idea behind them is to minimize the unnecessary killing of noncombatants, pure and simple. Unless those goatherds were actively carrying arms, the SEALs were morally bound to leave them alone. It doesn't matter if they might someday grow up to become Taliban fighters, because they might also grow up to...
