North Carolina: Breaking More than 100 Years of Democratic Control

My great-great-grandfather came back from the War Between the States with a wounded leg, his freedom and as a Republican. He and his brother were bond slaves in Davidson County prior to the war and yes, folks, there were white slaves, too. The history books just didn't tell that when we went to school. You have to look it up. He got a mini-ball in his leg at the Wilderness in May, 1864, and limped till he died. The really dangerous thing he did was openly admit he was a Republican during the Reconstruction Period.
