What we are witnessing, in my opinion, is the final conquest of Europe by Germany. This time without a Fuhrer or a Wehrmacht, but with the Euro. Of course, America's military has been keeping this lot from tearing each other apart again for nearly 70 years. What will they do when and if we ever bring our armed forces home? My guess is that Germany will use force to maintain its comfortable way of life. That's what they did in the past, and it's what France did in the distant past, and what Italy (then Rome) did even further back. It's built in to their social DNA.

But with Sunday's returns from France and Greece, the mega-trends on the Old Continent are unmistakable. And for the European Union, they are ominous.

Nationalism -- be it economic nationalism or ethnic nationalism -- is ascendant. Transnationalism and multiculturalism are in headlong if not irreversible retreat. The European project is itself imperiled.
