Why Romney Won the First Debate

I just wish all moderators of the debates would take a lesson from Lehrer. His method allowed the contestants to give their ideas, not respond to an offshoot idea from the commentator. Lehrer really surprised me.

I don't know what caused Lehrer to behave as he did, but whether he lost control or did it by design, I liked it. Ask the question and get the *#@- out of the way.

Jim Lehrer had the common sense to know that the debate was not about him and the candates should be allowed to express their own opinions and respond to comments. Some of the other commentators will try to be the "star" and anticipate that the next days news stories will be about them.
Jim Lehrer was effective in one area as the moderator of the first Presidential Debate of 2012.  That is, he convinced the audience to not be a factor by remaining generally quiet.  While he was not very effective in controlling the candidates, Lehrer’s style seemed to work out well in facilitating his primary goal of drawing out ideological contrasts.
