Rotten to the Core: Obama's War on Academic Standards (Part 1)

I teach at Technical College and without exception at least 50% of my students are reading at what I would consider a 5-6th grade level. Basically, not functional levels. They struggle with newspaper articles and can't write an essay. Its horrifying, and these are the people who vote for Obama. Whenever I hear the expression "teacher's salaries", blood shoots out my eyes. I don't think they should be paid ANYTHING since the level of competence I see could be attained by watching TV and playing video games. Instead of teaching accounting, I'm teaching arithmetic.

I am a professor of mathematics and physics at Harvard. I do know from long experience what you are going through. At Harvard the administration has cautioned all professors not to be critical of dysfunctional students and instead be accepting and tolerant. In private discussion with my fellow professors all express alarm yet individually and as a group none of us can do much to effect change. It is the administration and not us that deems who is accepted to Harvard. We have many excellent students. However, there are also many that simply do not belong here.

I was a TA in Chemistry at Harvard in the early fifties. We had lots of students in those courses who also didn't belong at Harvard. We called them ill prepared, lazy, bad attitude and a bit of stupidity rolled in. Many were legacies taken to support family tradition not to mention future generous donations.. Now the 'shouldn't be there" lot come with other descriptions. Also in the fifties Harvard practiced different sorts of discrimination - racial, religious not to mention against graduates of public high schools. That kept out many students with great talent. Another matter. We did have high standards for those who did get in, even if many were incompetent.

Once again, Buck O, I have no idea who the person is illustrated in the link. Secondly the childish words speaks much. This applies to the content of your posts and that also of the author of the link who wrote it's contents (you?).

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof. Can you describe your dissertation?
Buck O Wrote: Jan 23, 2013 11:42 AM
You might want to ask him for proof he was a 5-star Admiral, too, because he also claimed to be that.

Of course I can describe my two dissertations along with providing numerous research papers. The problem is that such would identify me not only to readers but also to administration and faculty. Though I am a tenured professor in two sciences there is much 'political correctness' here at Harvard. Therefore, I wish to remain anonymous.

Sorry but the highest Admiral rating I know is that of a former professor (not here) that was a four star. I don't believe the five star Admiral rank is currently issued. As I recall the last was during WW2.. with none since. I do know that some fleet commanders who are of Admiral rank leisurely refer to themselves at being a "fleet Admiral". This is somewhat misplaced and does not imply that they are five star of rank.

America's downfall doesn't begin with the "low-information voter." It starts with the no-knowledge student.

For decades, collectivist agitators in our schools have chipped away at academic excellence in the name of fairness, diversity and social justice. "Progressive" reformers denounced Western civilization requirements, the Founding Fathers and the Great Books as racist. They attacked traditional grammar classes as irrelevant in modern life. They deemed ability grouping of students (tracking) bad for self-esteem. They replaced time-tested rote techniques and standard algorithms with fuzzy math, inventive spelling and multicultural claptrap.

Under President Obama, these top-down mal-formers -- empowered by Washington education bureaucrats and backed...
