Good column Kurt. I have said for a long time now that we have become a police state. Too many laws and too many ambiguous ones that only serve to generate legal business for lawyers. Today's justice system is no longer about justice, it's all about money. If you have enough money, you'll never serve one day of jail time and you'll get a "Real" defense. No money and you sit in jail for months and even years waiting on a "public defender" which should be re-labeled "prosecutor's assistant".

"Prosecutor's assistant" is exactly right. I have seen this born out in a number of cases in our local courts.

If you think a twenty-something ought to be tossed in federal prison for 35 years because he tried to download some musty academic journal articles without permission, you are a lot things, but a conservative is not one of them.
