"I want to chat about why it failed in the face of overwhelming popular support." It seems Mr. Galen has bought into the MSM headlines claiming 90% popular support for expanded background checks. It's sad that almost nobody looks below that Q&A at the 2nd question dealing with removing our right to free exchange of private property. When answered, popular support falls to 40%. And Mr. Galen also completely misses the entire reason for Obama's support of any form of new gun regulation. He wanted the Senate to pass the bill knowing full well it would never pass the House, allowing him to use that as a wedge issue in his quest to win control of the House. It was never "about the children", but about politics.

This column is about the vote on Wednesday in the U.S. Senate on the amendment to the gun control bill which had as its two main sponsors Democrat Joe Manchin (WVa) and Republican Pat Toomey (Pa).

The effect of the amendment would have been, among other things, to have increased background checks on people buying guns to include gun shows and internet sales.

I don't want to discuss the merits of the amendment; I want to chat about why it failed in the face of overwhelming popular support.
