The Republican Rape Dilemma

The Almighty does not instruct us to be anti-abortionists. The Bible indicates a contrary position, specifically Exodus XXI (RSV): "22. When men strive together, and hurt a woman with child, so that there is a miscarriage, and yet no harm follows, the one who hurt her shall be fined, according as the woman's husband shall lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. "23. If any harm follows, then you shall give life for life, "24. eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, "25. burn for burn, wound for wound, stripe for stripe." That means the death penalty for killing a pregnant woman during a riot, but only a fine if one kills a fetus. The life of a fetus is not human life, according to the Bible.

I suggest you take a course in hermeneutics before you attempt to explain Biblical truth in the future. The unfortunate use of the term miscarriage may lead you to believe that the fetus is killed, but that is not the case. It simply mean that she gives birth prematurely. This is underscored in the subsequent passage that refines the concept of "no harm."

According to the Bible a life of a fetus is a human life. See Psalm 139:13.

In those primitive times, miscarried babies die. Thus its use is not that unfortunate. I notice no assertion of any mistranslation of original texts.

Verses Psalm 139:13 and Jeremiah 1:5 sound more like assertions of the Almighty's omniscience rather than anybody's pre-birth status.

As Richard Mourdock’s Indiana Senate fate hinges on how voters absorb his views on rape, all conservatives have an opportunity for a look in the mirror.

Just how pro-life do we want to be?

The Mourdock controversy is nothing like Todd Akin’s self-inflicted wound in Missouri, the result of an embrace of just plain bad medical information.

Mourdock is in hot water for accurately (if not particularly skillfully) articulating what God instructs about the life of the unborn.

If he is on politically shaky ground, it is because he had the courage to stand on the...
