Marriage Best Left to Churches

I think it is kind of strange that all these gay people in Washington are getting married just in time to pay the marriage tax penalty for 2012... in white dresses and bright red lipstick too... those never look right together. I haven't seen 2 men in white dresses yet though, that would be really take-the-cake weird. Anyway, why bother?

There isn't necessarily a tax penalty for being married. It depends on how much is earned by each partner, so in cases where one partner earned all or most of the income, it can be to their advantage to file jointly. And they can still file separately just as they did before, if it's to their advantage.

Anyway, I don't think those couples were thinking about that when they got married.

When I married my husband almost 15 years ago, I did so out of love and out of a desire to witness before God my commitment to him and his to me. The legal and tax ramifications did not enter into my head.

But for couples of the same sex, the legal and tax ramifications can be very important because their legal rights differ from those of heterosexual couples in a number of ways,...
