I consider George Washington one of my heroes, actually. He believed in strict civilian control of the military. He almost never brought politics and religion together no matter how much the fanatics wanted him to... (Here's where one speech of his gets dredged up in refutation of a lifetime of a secular approach to power). I think if he had offered the revolutionaries in France a bit of help then the radicals wouldn't have taken power there and the Revolution would have been more moderate... but Louis XVI paid for our Revolution, and ol' GW was loyal to his ally.
