Sowell could use the same analogy for the US in general. After WW II we became the economic behemoth of the world substantially by the fact that everyone else was starting from scratch or had adopted economy killing socialist/communist systems. While there has been resistance, we have gradually moved away from an understanding that somebody has to take risk and get the reward for everybody to move forward to "you didn't build that, somebody else did." Maggie Thatcher had it right when she said, "Socialism is a wonderful thing, until you run out of other people's money." Obama will kill the goose dead this time.

Killing the goose that lays the golden egg is one of those old fairy tales for children which has a heavy message that a lot of adults should listen to. The labor unions which have driven the makers of Twinkies into bankruptcy, potentially destroying 18,500 jobs, could have learned a lot from that old children's fairy tale.
